To define what Moore Brothers Company is all about is not always easy –whether trying to define the type of company it is or its company culture. However, that might be what makes it so special. Moore Brothers Company is about innovating, evolving and problem solving, which can make it a hard company to put neatly in a box.
“Craftsmanship, bespoke, custom, creative, problem-solvers, young, hardworking, industrious” are some of the words that come to Oliver and Sam’s mind when trying to define their company.
Another word that comes to mind is “employees”. They need more.
Moore Brother Company’s origins are very well rooted in the racing and yachting industries. Industries where a seemingly minimal weight difference can mean losing or winning a race. “Solving these problems translated well to other industries,” says Oliver. Now, the company builds carbon fiber parts for drones, cars, airplanes, submarines and High Altitude Platform Stations (HAPS) that aim to universalize access to the internet.
The company has gone from two employees in 2017 to 15 in 2021 and the brothers are looking to continue to expand in order to fulfill the job requests that MBC is receiving. One of the goals of MBC is to always offer year-round employment to its team, not just seasonal. “We’re offering a career here, not just a job,” says Oliver.
“You need zero experience in composites to start a career with us,” says Sam, “You need enough basic shop experience to be able to use basic woodworking tools safely, beyond that we can teach you everything else.”
Both brothers say that candidates need to be willing to learn “old school” carpentry techniques and read basic technical drawing. Other skills like operating a CNC machine and vacuum bagging complex parts to be autoclave cured are all part of the job.
“Process and attention-to-detail is important,” says Oliver. “Composites are all about following processes correctly. None of the processes in themselves are particularly challenging and are easily taught.” He continues. Oliver says the team works hard at documenting each job so that a smart, motivated individual can execute at a high professional level without years of experience.
“We’re craftsmen,”says Sam.
Sam and Oliver say that a strong work ethic is important, but work/life balance is also extremely important: No one should have to work more than 40 hours a week in order to make ends meet. Last year, when COVID-19 ripped through the 21,000 square foot workspace, everyone who fell sick was paid and the time they took off didn’t go towards their Paid Time Off (PTO).
Another thing that Sam wants people to know is that MBC is a very flat company –the traditional hierarchy that is often the norm in some companies is not part of the culture. Everyone works together to problem solve –it doesn’t matter what your title is.
What does the future look like for Moore Brothers Company? More large-scale projects according to Sam and Oliver. Projects like the 60-foot REGENT craft that will fly just above the water and ferry passengers to and from different ports. An innovative idea that is now becoming a reality. Currently, MBC is looking to hire a whole team for this particular project.
“Once you are on our team we will do whatever it takes to make sure we keep you here and engaged.” Says Oliver. “We are turning away work because we don’t have enough team members. The more we grow our team the more quality work we can do.”
